As a native of Tucson, AZ, a longtime principal of an excelling charter high school and a mother of two children, Charlene has seen firsthand the need for and taken advantage of school choice in Tucson. Charlene brings her wealth of educational experience and her passion for seeking cutting edge techniques and strategies for delivering a quality education and a pathway to college to students. Charlene has a keen sense of what has worked and combines that with her own graduate work and research to create a unique system and program at ACPA. Charlene has also worked on several non-profit boards, including two schools.
Freddy Mendoza – Assistant Principal, Teacher
As a native of Tucson, AZ, an educator and a father, Freddy involves himself in his community and has been participating in the improvement of Arizona’s Public Education System for more than a decade. He believes that ACPA’s focus on interdisciplinary learning and promotion of college readiness successfully gives the students of Tucson a competitive choice in their education. He has created many paths to hook students through music, sports, art and other co-curricular opportunities. Freddy brings connections to the cycling, soccer and triathlon communities in Tucson along with invaluable connections to the University of Arizona. Freddy founded the Southern Arizona Athletic Association which offers sporting opportunities to over 500 student athletes in the Tucson area.
Gülen Hicks – Assistant Principal, Teacher
As a Tucson, AZ resident and advocate of the grassroots charter movement with 2 school age children, Gülen believes that educational choice is one way in which she can improve public education in the Tucson community. She believes that Arizona needs to take significant strides to improve Mathematics test scores and believes that using the combination of hands-on learning and real-life connections to economics, engineering, architecture, etc. will do this. Gülen brings extensive business and finance experience and passion to the program.
Dan Bell – Teacher
Originally from Iowa, Dan has been a Tucson resident for over two decades. Mr. Bell strives to help students discover their own voice through respectful, creative, and successful learning experiences. He also brings a rich diversity of interests and skills to the task. He has performed with a professional saxophone quartet, he built an equatorial tracking platform for his telescope, and he has found and photographed nearly every species of snake and lizard in Arizona. In recent years he has fostered a unique partnership between ACPA and Saguaro National Park.
Brett Brower – Teacher
A fairly recent transplant to Tucson, Brett met his wife while they both served as Peace Corps volunteers to Morocco. They have two young children. His experiences growing up with American parents in France and Germany set him on a course to understand cross-cultural interactions, and educational challenges with students of varying skills and backgrounds in a very personal way. Brett merges his diverse educational experiences with a powerful interest in sustainable living and environmental stewardship. This, in combination with his Liberal Arts background in studio art, design and architectural restoration, create a classroom experience in which students are challenged to appreciate life and learn from it.
Jeff Rainey – Teacher
Jeff is a graduate of Northern Arizona University with a degree in Forestry. After serving in the US Coast Guard he lived in New Hampshire, where he taught Mathematics at a public hig school. Jeff and his wife then moved to Tucson where they both enrich our community as teachers. He brings his enthusiasm for nature, outdoor recreation, science, reading and music into his classroom.
